ceramic explorations

As a collaborative medium between clay and drawing, we made simple set of dishes as a canvas to draw on. Blaine drew free hand expressions into the bisque fired and glazed surfaces. Once the drawings were completed in pencil, we filled in the lines with black underglaze to create bold expressions of the lines he drew onto the ceramic surfaces. These exercises challenged his brain in a new way, and we found the outcomes to be quite beautiful. However, as the disease has progressed cognitively, his thought patterns have become less linear and this process came with a certain sense of pressure to perform.

drawing explorations

These sketches depict the development of Blaine’s drawing style over the past few years. He started out working primarily in pencil, and later discovered water colour. He has since gone back through some of his earlier drawings and added colour to them. These drawings are a little glimpse into his mind, showing how he works through a particular theme like ‘the beach’ or explores faces and eyes layered on top of each other. It’s beautiful to see these explorations and to understand what he is thinking about because we know it can be hard for him to express himself verbally.

Here is the original shrimp sketch and lettering that we used to create our trademark shrimp graphic and became our name. This was backed by popular request and once we started using it, it really stuck.

screen printing

This is a snapshot of what our ‘home studio’ looks like when we are in screen printing production. Every surface becomes a valuable drying rack. We screen print all our own apparel at home.

friends!

We love sharing our work and seeing our friends on colourful adventures wearing their shrimp gear. We also love to host events and bringing people together. We have raised over $5000 in 2019 through apparel sales from online order, markets and events, which we have donated to the Parkinson Society BC. We are tracking for an even bigger donation in 2020. This would not be possible without everyones support!
